Note that the Astron supplies are advertised with peak duty amperage numbers and in continuous duty can supply only about half of the rated current (that is, a twenty amp Astron can in reality supply only about ten amps continuously). They work great with my radios and I after using these for a few years there is no way I would pay $200 or $300 for an Astron or something like that. I have not looked at them on line in awhile and I see they are going up in price. They will be put down by hams that have never even seen one unfortunately! So like I said I want to share my use of these supplies over 4 years of time. So I have operated the radio on these supplies from 80 meters to 440 mhz. I have used one on a Yaesu FT-450D since I bought it 3 to 4 years ago and the other one was used on a Yaesu FT-100DM. In fact they do not put of any noise at all. My 2 supplies do not put off "a lot of noise". And I know there are other's on QRZ that use these also. I have had 2 of these 30 amp "switching" supplies for 3 to 4 years. I am going to respond to you from my experience and open myself up to be bashed for using this power supply. My 2 meter amplifier driven to nearly 190 watts output FM draws about 18 amps. Get a power supply rated higher and satisfy yourself. Most 100 watt output rated radios draw about 18 amps, 20 at the most on a CW full output test. Vary the match and see what happens to current drawn. To prove this, a power supply with a current meter powering a radio into a flat 50 ohm load will show a given current from the power supply.Ĭhange the match and watch the current meter while on an antenna that needs a tuner to correct the match any significant amount. They store a huge amount of power on an instantaneous basis.Īnother point is if a mismatch in system has a certain complex impedance, the radio can draw more current or less. In any power supply, the filter does smooth any AC component out but also act as a sink for DC current. Your overly concerned about this because it's not a continuous full current situation.Įven on CW mode the average is still not full current. This current is drawn from the power supply filters during voice peaks and replenished during the low power intervals. You can see this on a peak reading watt meter looking at both average and peak power readings while talking. On SSB the average power is only about 1/3 of the peak power.
